Jesus: The Ultimate Comforter

The One True God, the Holy Trinity – this is something our feeble human minds cannot fully comprehend. There is only one God and He is made up of three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. God the Father is the Creator of all that exists (Genesis 1:1–3 & John 1:1–4). God the Son is Jesus Christ, who incarnated Himself as a lowly human in order to suffer and die for the sins of all humans, then rise again to new life in ultimate victory over sin, death, and Satan (Matthew 1:23, Luke 23:44–46, Luke 24:2–7, & 1 Corinthians 15:55–58). God the Holy Spirit creates faith through God’s Word and Sacraments (Jude 1:17–23).

All three persons of the Holy Trinity are coequal and coeternal. All three make up the One True God who is omnipotent (all-powerful), omniscient (all-knowing), and omnipresent (present everywhere at the same time). God is the beginning and the end. He is truth. He is good and faithful. We do not have enough terminology in our inadequate human languages that can begin to describe the truly awesome power and might of God. How this all works is a mystery to us. “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgements and how inscrutable His ways!” (Romans 11:33).

For Christians and non-Christians alike, not being able to fully understand God results in two distinct responses: 1) Some accept His almighty power wholly and it builds their faith in Him, or 2) Some reject Him because He can’t be understood and is then pushed off to the wayside and wholly forgotten. Some use God’s complexity to explain away His greatness, claiming that He must be a fabrication of humans in order to control the masses. That is truly a sad existence. The hopelessness of that way of thinking brings nothing but depression, anxiety, and fear throughout one’s life.

We all face hard circumstances in life that are out of our control. No amount of planning and preparation can prevent them all. Without God in your life, those hard situations become impossible to resolve. Without God to fall back on, those impossible things bring chaos and unbalance into your whole existence. If you have no faith or trust in God as your Redeemer, then there is no way to recover from rock bottom and Satan will tempt you in every possible way to keep you there. Satan wants you to fill your Jesus-shaped hole in your heart with all sorts of different vices and voices. But nothing can complete you and nothing will fill that hole in your heart except Jesus Christ.

If you think God is out of touch and doesn’t understand the troubles you’re going through, you’re dead wrong. God has no sin, but He knows exactly what it is. He knows exactly how ugly and nasty it has made us all. He also knows what life is supposed to be like. This is the entire reason God the Son, Jesus Christ, stepped down from His throne in heaven to become a human. He needed to experience firsthand what we experience. He needed to take all our sin and suffering onto Himself so He could feel our pains of body, mind, and soul.

Jesus, the Son of Man, was tempted by Satan for 40 days in the wilderness. Not once did He fail and give in, because He is also the God the Son; fully God and fully human. Jesus even had to be forsaken by God the Father as He hung on the cross so that He would be able to take our sin with Him to the grave. Jesus suffered and died in one of the most agonizing ways imaginable. The Romans were amazing at two things: conquest and torturous, gruesome executions. If you think that Jesus doesn’t know what you’re going through, you’re dead wrong.

Why did He do all this for us? Well, nothing and no one on earth was good enough to atone for the sin that has blackened and sickened God’s perfect creation. So, out of His abounding love for us, God decided that He would do it Himself. However, God cannot die, so He had to become one of us to die a perfect and sinless death and then raise Himself up from the grave. Only then could He truly bind and defeat all sin, death, and the devil. Even Jesus’ disciples didn’t fully understand His true mission on earth until after the Holy Spirit came to them and blessed them with God’s understanding at Pentecost. Then they were sent out to the all the earth to spread the great news of God’s salvation for us through Jesus.

What price must we pay to take part in this salvation? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! All we must do is believe that Jesus did these things for us. With that belief, our faith and trust in Him will grow. As our faith and trust grows, our understanding of God’s love for us grows too, which then gives us a repentant heart. So, simply put, Jesus is the only way to heaven; Jesus is the only path to everlasting life. And the best part is this: He gave it to you and me, completely and utterly FREE! He wants nothing from us but our belief. How is that not the most comforting thing ever? Sing His praises and glorify Him in all you think, say, and do.

“’Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to Myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.’ Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in Me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in My name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.’” (John 14:1–6, 12–14).
