Sing His Praise

The book of Isaiah is filled with doom and gloom. Israel had been living in disobedience to God’s Will for them, rejecting God and worshipping other gods. As a result, God was going to have foreign armies destroy their nation and enslave the survivors. The prophet Isaiah painted that miserable picture to them. However, chapter twelve is a ray of bright light that cuts through the gloomy darkness. Here, Isaiah gave the Israelites a look into a future time when God’s anger with them would be turned away. Isaiah gives them the assurance that they are loved by God, even though He was angry with them.

“In that day you will say: ‘I will praise you, Lord. Although you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you have comforted me. Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; He has become my salvation.’ With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. In that day you will say: ‘Give praise to the Lord, proclaim His name; make known among the nations what He has done, and proclaim that His name is exalted. Sing to the Lord, for He has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world. Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you.’” (Isaiah 12:1–6).

Isaiah told the Israelites that when God eventually brought His salvation to them through the Messiah, Jesus Christ, they would not be afraid but would instead sing His praises to all the earth. We should not sing His praises only when times are good but should also sing His praises when times are bad too. Even if the whole world is falling down around us, we must be willing and able to trust in God and not be afraid. He is our strength and defense. He is our salvation. With that knowledge, we can pass through the trials of this life in God’s hands, trusting in Him always.

The beautiful hymn “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee” comes to mind:

“Joyful, joyful we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love! Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, praising Thee, their sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, drive the gloom of doubt away. Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day.”

“All Thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heaven reflect Thy rays, stars and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea, chanting bird, and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in Thee.”

“Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blest, well-spring of the joy of living, ocean-depth of happy rest! Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, fountainhead of love divine: Joyful, we Thy heaven inherit! Joyful, we by grace are Thine!”

With God on our side, we have no need to fear anything.
