Tiny, Yet Immeasurably Valuable

“By wisdom the Lord laid the earth’s foundations, by understanding He set the heavens in place; by His knowledge the watery depths were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew. My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion; they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck. Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble. When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, for the Lord will be at your side and will keep your foot from being snared.” (Proverbs 3:19–26).

God created the entire universe, the heavens and the earth. In doing so, He showed us His wisdom and understanding that we will never be able to fully comprehend. You can see it in the smallest details of how atoms interact with one another to eventually form DNA, cells, and fully functional living organisms. You can also see it on a very large scale: our planet, our solar system, our galaxy, and so on. The evidence that Earth was created impeccably by our perfect God is all around us. God placed Earth the perfect distance from the sun to provide us with the right amount of heat and light. Too close and everything would be scorched; too far away and everything would freeze. God made the Earth with the perfect tilt, perfect rotation on its axis, and perfect orbit around the sun to give us a perfect time scale and seasons.

That is just our tiny little planet, within our tiny little solar system, within our galaxy known as the Milky Way. With the naked eye, you can see a small part of our galaxy as a streak of “cloudy stars” across the night sky. With high-powered telescopes in space beyond our atmosphere, scientists have been able to photograph many amazing things in our universe. It has been estimated that the Milky Way Galaxy contains an upwards of 400 billion stars, each with their own solar system of planets. It has also been estimated that there are an upwards of 200 billion galaxies in the universe. Each of those galaxies could have hundreds of billions of stars themselves. Just like we would never be able to count every grain of sand on our own planet, we will never be able to count every galaxy in the universe, let alone each star, solar system, or planet.

God created all of these things simply with His perfect Words. What’s even more marvelous is that God knows the name of every single planet in the entire universe. And He placed each one exactly where it belongs. “Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name; by the greatness of His might and because He is strong in power, not one is missing.” (Isaiah 40:26).

Are you feeling tiny yet? Keep the universe’s theorized size in your mind. With that thought, imagine that the universe is your house. We would be many times smaller than a speck of microscopic dust that is floating around inside. If size was the scale by which our worth was measured, the entire human race combined – past, present, and future – would be worth almost nothing. Satan constantly tries to convince us that we are worthless. He tries to tell us that God is far too busy to pay us any attention. The lies he tells us are the means by which he instills fear within us: the fear of not living up to your full potential, the fear of failure, the fear of being unloved.

FEAR NOT! God sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to save us all. Jesus took all of our sins to the cross and gave up His blood as a sacrifice to atone for them all. Jesus then broke the chains of death and defied the grave by rising back to life. Because of Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection – God’s ultimate love story for us all – we no longer have to die for all eternity because He died in our place. God loves and cares about each one of us MUCH MORE than the entire universe! In fact, “even the hairs of your head are all numbered.” (Luke 12:7). That means you are worth more to God than anything else! It doesn’t matter how many times you fall short or fail, His love for you endures forever and your value to Him is immeasurable. (Read Psalm 136).

Through His Word, God helps to guide us to the safe path that is in Jesus Christ. With trust and faith in our Almighty God, we can truly lay down to sleep at night in total peace and comfort. That is because we know that no matter what happens, God loves and cares for us deeper than everything else He created. So, even if a sudden and terrible disaster happens, we know that the Lord God is always with us. And even if that disaster consumes our life, we still have nothing to worry about. That is because we have God’s promise of eternal life in heaven. All we must do is believe in Him. So, thanks be to God! To Him be all glory and honor and praise, forever and ever! Hallelujah!
